Marriage in Thailand

Legally registered marriages between foreigners and between foreigners and Thais are easily done and Sunbelt Asia is happy to assist you in this matter.If you plan on being in Bangkok only a few days then it is best done quickly.

A legally registered marriage in Thailand is considered legal in most countries of the world. Each Foreign National will need to visit their respective embassy to obtain an "Affidavit of Freedom to Marry". This document states you are not already married and eligible for the marriage process in Thailand. You will need to provide divorce or death certificates if such is applicable.

If one of the partners is Thai then the Thai person needs copies of their ID card and House Registration book. However, if the woman is a divorcee or widow and has been divorced or widowed less than 310 days she cannot get married unless

a) A child has been born during such period or;
b) The divorced couple (same people) remarry or;
c) There is a certificate issued by a qualified doctor who is a lawful physical practitioner in medicine showing that the woman is not pregnant or;
d) There is an order of the Court allowing the woman to marry.

Sunbelt Asia will legally translate the affidavit and our lawyers will have the translations notarized, and the Consul signature verified at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The government fee for this is 400 Baht per document. Translation, notary, and signature verification process is normally 2-3 days. A power of attorney (to verify the documents) could be given if the Foreigners are not available to visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After you have the completed documents you are eligible to marry in Thailand at any local District Office (also known as Amphur).

Please note: If you are interested in a Prenuptial agreement, it must to registered at the time of marriage. Additionally, both parties must be over the age of 17 and for those under the age of 20, written parental consent is required, which must be translated into Thai.
